      Background InformationPeroxiredoxin-4 (PRDX4), sometimes referred to as antioxidant enzyme AOE372, is part of the thioredoxin peroxidase family of antioxidants. Antioxidants can reduce reactive oxygen species, such as hydrogen peroxide, and seem to regulate intracellular peroxide levels which have some control over signal transduction. Peroxiredoxin-4 uses the peroxide substrate to oxidize an active-site cysteine to a sulfenic acid.

The enzyme may be subsequently regenerated by reduction of the disulfide by thioredoxin.

      Irreversibly inactivated by overoxidation of Cys-124 (to Cys-SO3H) upon oxidative stress.
