Background InformationOLFM4, also known as Olfactomedin-4, Antiapoptotic protein GW112, G-CSF-stimulated clone 1 protein (hGC-1), or hOLfD, and encoded by the gene OLFM4/GW112 is a multimeric protein that has been found both extracellularly, interacting with cell surface lectins and cadherin proteins, and intracellularly within the mitochondria and cytoplasm. OLFM4 is expressed during myeloid lineage development but also in found in adult prostate, bone marrow, and stomach, as well as pancreatic cancer cells. The protein appears to govern cell proliferation in pancreatic cancer cells however in leukemic cell lines it inhibits cell growth and induces cell differentiation and apoptosis. The gene is induced by retinoic acid contact and signaling is linked via the NFkappaB pathway.
