      OverviewThe SMC™ Human IL-5 High Sensitivity Immunoassay Kit contains all reagents required to perform the assay. This assay takes advantage of a standard immunoassay workflow configured in a standard plate format. Assay protocols are similar to existing sandwich ELISA methods with two key differences: 1) Elution buffer disrupts the sandwich, separating the labeled detection antibody for quantification. 2) The Erenna® and SMCxPRO™ immunoassay systems detect analytes using Single Molecule Counting (SMC™) technology.
      Background InformationInterleukin 5 (IL-5), produced by T helper cells and mast cells, is a mediator of eosinophil maturation in bone marrow and release into the bloodstream and plays a role in eosinophil-based inflammatory processes, particularly allergic inflammation, asthma, and eosinophilic esophagitis. Inhibiting the action of IL-5 can suppress tissue damage due to eosinophil accumulation during pulmonary inflammation in asthma. As well, inhibition of IL-5 has been shown to reduce blood and bronchoalveolar eosinophilia caused by allergic challenge and chronic disease.
