      DescriptionOncostatin M Protein, Recombinant human
OverviewOncostatin M is an important growth regulating cytokine that affects, variably, a number of tumor and normal cells. Oncostatin M exerts inhibitory effects on the growth of A375 melanoma and other cancer cells but augments the growth of normal fibroblasts, AIDS related Kaposi sarcoma cells, and certain other cells. Human Oncostatin M is a 26 kDa protein containing 227 amino acid residues.

Specific ActivityHuman Oncostatin M is fully biologically active when compared to standards. The ED50 as determined by the dose-dependent stimulation of the proliferation of human TF-1 cells is <= 2 ng/mL corresponding to a specific activity of >= 5 x 10(E5) units/mg.
      Entrez Gene Number
Entrez Gene SummaryOncostatin M is a member of a cytokine family that includes leukemia-inhibitory factor, granulocyte colony-stimulating factor, and interleukin 6. This gene encodes a growth regulator which inhibits the proliferation of a number of tumor cell lines. It regulates cytokine production, including IL-6, G-CSF and GM-CSF from endothelial cells.
      Gene Symbol
      • OSM
      • MGC20461
      UniProt Number
UniProt SummaryFUNCTION: SwissProt: P13725 # Growth regulator. Inhibits the proliferation of a number of tumor cell lines. It regulates cytokine production, including IL-6, G-CSF and GM-CSF from endothelial cells. Uses both type I OSM receptor (heterodimers composed of LIPR and IL6ST) and type II OSM receptor (heterodimers composed of OSMR and IL6ST).
SIZE: 252 amino acids; 28484 Da
      SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Secreted.
SIMILARITY: SwissProt: P13725 ## Belongs to the LIF/OSM family.
