      • Chemicon
      DescriptionNerve Growth Factor-β
OverviewNerve growth factor-beta (beta-NGF) is a potent neurotrophic factor which supports the growth and survivability of nerve and/or glial cells. The active form of human beta-NGF is is a noncovalently disulfide-linked homodimer, formed by two 13.5 kDa polypeptide monomers (238 total amino acids). The three disulfide bonds are required for biological activity.

Specific ActivityChemicon's human beta-NGF is fully biologically active when compared to standards. The ED(50) as determined by the dose-dependent induction of choline acetyltransferase activity in rat basal forebrain primary septal cultures was found to be 2.0-5.0 ng/mL.
      Entrez Gene Number
Entrez Gene SummaryThis gene is a member of the NGF-beta family and encodes a secreted protein which homodimerizes and is incorporated into a larger complex. This protein has nerve growth stimulating activity and the complex is involved in the regulation of growth and the differentiation of sympathetic and certain sensory neurons. Mutations in this gene have been associated with hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathy, type 5 (HSAN5), and dysregulation of this gene's expression is associated with allergic rhinitis.

      UniProt Number
UniProt SummaryFUNCTION: SwissProt: P01138 # Nerve growth factor is important for the development and maintenance of the sympathetic and sensory nervous systems. It stimulates division and differentiation of sympathetic and embryonic sensory neurons.
SIZE: 241 amino acids; 26959 Da
      SUBUNIT: Homodimer.
      SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Secreted.
DISEASE: SwissProt: P01138 # Defects in NGFB are the cause of hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathy type 5 (HSAN5) [MIM:608654]. Hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathies are characterized by loss of pain sensation in combination with other sensory and/or autonomic abnormalities. HSAN5 patients manifest loss of pain perception and impaired temperature sensitivity, ulcers, and in some cases self- mutilation. The autonomic involvement is variable.
SIMILARITY: SwissProt: P01138 ## Belongs to the NGF-beta family.

      Storage and Shipping Information
Storage ConditionsThe lyophilized powder, though stable at room temperature, is best stored at -20°C. Reconstitute with sterile water to a concentration of 0.1-1.0 mg/mL. This solution can be diluted into water or buffered solutions and stored at 2-8ºC for one week or at -20ºC for future use. Reconstituted beta-NGF should be stored in undiluted aliquots at -20°C for up to six months.
