      Trade Name
      • Chemicon
      DescriptionInterleukin-6 Protein, Recombinant human
OverviewInterleukin-6 (IL-6) is a potent lymphoid cell growth factor which affects B-lymphocytes, T-lymphocytes and hybridoma cells. It will also affect cytotoxic T-cells in combination with other factors such as IL-2 and g-interferon. Human IL-6 is a 20.9 kDa protein containing 184 amino acid residues.
      Alternate Names
      • IL-6
      Product Information
PresentationLyophilized from 10 mM Sodium Citrate, pH 7.5.
      Quality LevelMQ100
ApplicationThe recombinant human Interleukin-6 protein (or IL-6 protein) is a potent lymphoid cell growth factor which affects B-lymphocytes, T-lymphocytes & hybridoma cells.
      Key Applications
      • Cell Culture
Application NotesFor most in vitro applications, IL-6 exerts its biological activity in the concentration range of 0.1 to 10.0 ng/mL. Responding cells are (partial list): B-cells, hybridoma cells.
      Biological Information
PurityGreater than 98% by SDS-PAGE and HPLC analysis. Endotoxin level is less than 0.1 ng per μg (1EU/ug) of IFN gamma.
Specific ActivityHuman IL-6 is fully biologically active when compared to standards. The ED50 as determined by the dose-dependent stimulation of the proliferation of IL-6-dependent mouse 7TD1 cells is <= 0.1 ng/mL, corresponding to a specific activity of >= 1 x 10(E7) units/mg.

      UniProt Number
UniProt SummaryFUNCTION: SwissProt: P05231 # IL-6 is a cytokine with a wide variety of biological functions: it plays an essential role in the final differentiation of B-cells into Ig-secreting cells, it induces myeloma and plasmacytoma growth, it induces nerve cells differentiation, in hepatocytes it induces acute phase reactants.
SIZE: 212 amino acids; 23718 Da
      PTM: N- and O-glycosylated.
DISEASE: SwissProt: P05231 # Genetic variations in IL6 are associated with susceptibility to systemic juvenile rheumatoid arthritis [MIM:604302]. Systemic juvenile rheumatoid arthritis is juvenile chronic arthritis associated with severe, debilitating, extraarticular features, and occasionally fatal complications. Despite medical treatment, many children still experience early joint destruction, necessitating surgical replacement. & At least 1 polymorphism in the IL6 gene renders HIV- infected men susceptible to Kaposi sarcoma [MIM:148000]. Kaposi sarcoma is a sarcoma of spindle cells mixed with angiomatous tissue. A relatively rare malignant skin tumor that results in multifocal purplish coloured papules or plaques that eventually form nodules. Most commonly seen in patients who suffer from AIDS.
SIMILARITY: SwissProt: P05231 ## Belongs to the IL-6 superfamily.

      Storage and Shipping Information
Storage ConditionsCentrifuge the vial prior to opening. Reconstitute in water to a concentration of 0.1 – 0.5 mg/mL. Gently shake the solution for about 10 minutes for better solubility. Do not vortex. The solution can be stored at 2-8°C for up to 1 week. For extended storage, it is recommended to further dilute in a buffer containing a carrier protein and store in working aliquots at -20°C or -80°C.
