      Entrez Gene Number
Entrez Gene SummaryDefensins are a family of microbicidal and cytotoxic peptides thought to be involved in host defense. They are abundant in the granules of neutrophils and also found in the epithelia of mucosal surfaces such as those of the intestine, respiratory tract, urinary tract, and vagina. Members of the defensin family are highly similar in protein sequence and distinguished by a conserved cysteine motif. Several alpha defensin genes appear to be clustered on chromosome 8. The protein encoded by this gene, defensin, alpha 1, is found in the microbicidal granules of neutrophils and likely plays a role in phagocyte-mediated host defense. It differs from defensin, alpha 3 by only one amino acid.

      Storage and Shipping Information
Storage ConditionsThe lyophilized protein, though stable for a few weeks at room temperature, is best stored at -20°C. After a quick spin, reconstitute in water to a concentration of 0.1-1.0 mg/mL. This solution can then be diluted into other aqueous buffers and stored at 4°C for 1 week or -20°C for future use. Reconstituted NP-1 should be stored in undiluted aliquots at -20°C for up to 6 months. Avoid repeated freeze/thaw cycles.
