Native myelin basic protein purified from mouse central nervous system tissue using the method of Määtä, et al,1997. Myelin basic protein (MBP) is one of the main components found in myelin and is critical for the formation and stability of the multilamellar myelin sheath. There are 4 isoforms: 21.5 kDa, 18.5 kDa, 17 kDa, and 14 kDa. MBP represents the antigen against which autoimmune antibodies are produced in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). MBP can also be used to induce experimental allergic encephalomyelitis in animal models of MS.
