Dioxin analysis by GC-MS
Get safe with SupraSolv® MS solvents from EMD Millipore
Dioxins and furans, short for polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDD) and dibenzofurans (PCDF), are environmental pollutants with very high toxic potential. They are unintentionally produced in many industrial processes, but can also occur from natural sources. Humans are primarily exposed to dioxins by contaminated food.
Dioxin determination is mostly done by GC-MS. using dichloromethane, n-Hexane or toluene for sample preparation. EMD Millipore offers these three solvents in high-purity SupraSolv® MS grade. Due to its unique features, SupraSolv® MS is perfectly suited for detecting dioxins by GC-MS using established methods and offer distinct advantages over alternative solvents.
Testing food for dioxins is important
The numerous dioxin scandals in the last years show us, how important it is to test food for dioxins. Ten thousands of samples are tested worldwide every year; more than a half of them are environmental samples. Dioxins, short for polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDD) and dibenzofurans (PCDF), are unintentionally produced in many industrial processes and can also occur from natural sources. In humans, dioxins can cause a severe form of acne, so-called chloracne, increase tumour risk, and damage the liver, the nervous system and the immune system, among others. Humans are primarily exposed to dioxins by eating contaminated food, mainly fish, meat, and dairy products. Because dioxins accumulate in the fat tissue of animals and humans over time, even small exposures may eventually reach dangerous levels. That's why testing food for dioxins is so important - a fact that is confirmed by many dioxin contamination incidents.
SupraSolv® MS for reliable dioxin determination
Most dioxin testing is done by gas chromatography combined with mass spectrometric detection (GC-MS) according several regulatory standards, such as EPA method 3545A (for solid samples), DIN 38414-24 (soil and sediments), VDI 3499/1 (filter dust, boiler ash etc.) or VDI 3498/1 (indoor air). As solvents for sample preparation dichloromethane, n-Hexane or toluene are used. All three of these solvents are available from EMD Millipore in high-purity SupraSolv® MS grade.
With SupraSolv® MS you can be sure to achieve accurate and reliable analytical results every time.
SupraSolv® MS offers the largest specified retention time range compared to other GC solvents on the market. Furthermore the permissible concentration of interference signals within the retention time range is the lowest. As a result, you can use SupraSolv® MS within the most comprehensive application area.
