      Background InformationPodocalyxin-like protein 1 is a sialomucin that is involved in the regulation of both cell adhesion and cell morphology through its interactions with several intracellular and at least one extracellular ligand. It is known to play an essential role in the formation and maintenance of podocyte foot processes, and in cancer development and aggressiveness by inducing cell migration and invasion through its interaction with the actin-binding protein, EZR. It is reported that Podocalyxin-mediated EZR-dependent signaling events increases MAPK and PI3K pathway activity in cancer cells. Podocalyxin-like protein 1 expression in the hematopoietic system is shown to correlate with cell migration and the seeding of new hematopoietic tissues. Podocalyxin-like protein 1 is also expressed in kidney podocytes, hematopoietic progenitors, vascular endothelia, and a subset of neurons. Aberrant expression can be observed in subsets of breast, prostate, liver, pancreatic, and kidney cancer as well as leukemia, while absence of podocalyxin-like protein 1 results in perinatal lethality. This protein is known to share close sequence homology with CD34 and endoglycan.
