      Background InformationThioredoxin-dependent peroxide reductase or mitochondrial, also known as Antioxidant protein 1 or AOP-1 or HBC189 or Peroxiredoxin III (Prx-III or Peroxiredoxin-3) or Protein MER5 homolog, and encoded by the gene name PRDX3 or AOP1, Peroxiredoxin 3 contains an antioxidant function and is localized in the mitochondrion. Peroxiredoxin-3 shows significant sequence similarity to the C22 subunit of Salmonella typhimurium alkylhydroperoxide reductase. Expression of Peroxiredoxin-3 in E. coli deficient in the C22-subunit protein rescued resistance of the bacteria to alkylhydroperoxide. The human and mouse proteins are highly conserved, and they map to the regions syntenic between mouse and human chromosomes. Sequence comparisons with recently cloned mammalian homologues suggest that these Peroxiredoxin-3 proteins consist of a family that is responsible for regulation of cellular proliferation, differentiation, and antioxidant functions.
