      Background InformationOncostatin M (OSM) is a secreted cytokine protein that inhibits the proliferation of a number of tumor cell lines. It also modulates a number of cytokines important in cell growth including IL-6, G-CSF, and GM-CSF. It plays an important role in the maturation of liver hepatocytes and in liver development and regeneration. Oncostatin M appears to operate through cell surface receptors that contain gp130 and utilizes the traditional JAK/STAT signaling pathways. It was originally isolated way back in 1986 from the growth media of PMA treated U-937 cells and its ability to stop the growth of melanoma cell lines. Oncostatin M also appears to play a role as a mediator of inflammation; however it is not completely clear if Oncostatin M is a pro-inflammatory or anti-inflammatory molecule, or both. Oncostatin M is released by stimulated T cells and the Oncostatin M caused increased expression of P-selectin and IL-6 expression from endothelial cells, all pro-inflammatory items, however in certain arthritis models, Oncostatin M reduces joint destruction driven by inflammatory antibodies, so clearly it can function as an anti-inflammatory compound as well. Finally Oncostatin M is a growth factor for certain cells rather than an inhibitor, interestingly the AIDS Kaposi’s sarcoma spindle cells respond heavily to Oncostatin addition. EMD-Millipore’s Anti-Oncostatin M rabbit monoclonal, clone EPR7150 has been tested in western blot on human cell and tissue lysates as well as recombinant Oncostatin M.
