      Background InformationStem cells are unspecialized cells capable of renewing themselves through cell division and can differentiate into diverse specialized cell types. Embryonic stem cells, as the name suggests, are derived from embryos. Stem cell markers refer to the cell surface receptors that selectively bind signaling molecules. Each cell type has a unique combination of receptors on their surface that makes each cell type distinguishable from other kinds of cells.
      Novel hES cell marker EF12 binds a panel of ES and EC cells with a marked reduction in binding to NTERA-2 cells upon retinoic acid-induced differentiation. The epitope bound by this antibody is likely to be a cell surface carbohydrate residue, as treatment of 2102Ep with neuraminidase markedly reduces antibody binding. In cell staining, this antibody shows differential staining between undifferentiated and differentiated regions of cells within the hESc culture.
