      Background InformationMonocarboxylate Transporter 1 (MCT1), also known as Solute carrier family 16 member 1 (SLC16A1), catalyzes the rapid transport across the plasma membrane of many monocarboxylates such as lactate, pyruvate, branched-chain oxo acids derived from leucine, valine and isoleucine, and the ketone bodies acetoacetate, beta-hydroxybutyrate and acetate. Monocarboxylate Transporter 1 is located in the cell membrane, and is widely expressed in both normal and cancer cells. Monocarboxylate Transporter 1 is involved in symptomatic deficiency in lactate transport (SDLT).
