Background InformationMembrane metallo-endopeptidase-like 1 (MMEL1) is a single-pass type II membrane protein belonging to the peptidase M13 family. MMEL1 plays an important role in pain perception, arterial pressure regulation, phosphate metabolism, and homeostasis. MMEL1 is predominantly expressed in testis and weakly expressed in brain, kidney and heart. Mutations of MMEL1 have been associated with primary biliary cirrhosis.
