      Background InformationGamma-aminobutyric acid receptor-associated protein-like 2 or GABA(A receptor-associated protein-like 2 or Ganglioside expression factor 2 or GEF-2 or General protein transport factor p16 or Golgi-associated ATPase enhancer of 16 kDa or GATE-16 or MAP1 light chain 3-related protein, and encoded by the gene name GABARAPL2 or FLC3A or GEF2, is an intra-Golgi transport modulator that interacts with N-ethylmaleimide-sensitive factor (NSF) and the Golgi v-SNARE GOS-28. It first stimulates the ATPase activity of NSF, which in turn stimulates the association with GOSR1. GATE-16 (also known as Golgi-associated ATPase Enhancer of 16 kDa, Gamma-aminobutyric acid receptor-associated protein-like 2 or GABARAPL2) is the mammalian homologue of Apg8 ubiquitin-like protein which plays a role in autophagy. GATE-16 has also been associated with intra-Golgi transport and receptor organization. GATE-16 is necessary for the maturation of the autophagosome. There are at least three families of mammalian Atg8-related proteins: microtubule-associated protein 1 light chain 3 (LC3); Golgi-associated ATPase enhancer of 16 kDa (GATE16); and γ-aminobutyric-acid-type-A (GABAA)-receptor-associated protein (GABARAP).
