      • Membrane component chromosome 17 surface marker 1
Background InformationFlot2, also known as Flotillin-2, or Epidermal surface antigen (ESA), or Membrane component chromosome 17 surface marker 1 (M17S1), and encoded by the gene FLOT2/ESA1/M17S1, is a scaffold protein located within caveolar membranes that helps in the formation of the caveolae or caveolae-like vesicles. Flot2 forms hetero-oligomeric complexes of flotillin-1 and flotillin-2 and caveolin-1 and caveolin-2. Additionally, Flot2 is involved in epidermal cell adhesion, important in cancer as well as in development as well. Flot2 is expressed in many tissues and cell types from developing neurons to cancerous tumor tissues. Also Flot2 expression has been implicated in several signaling pathways in tumor cells and recently high Flot2 expression was associated with poor survival outcomes in patients with breast cancer and thus Flot2 maybe a prognostic marker for survival and treatment.
