      Alternate Names
      • Signal transducer CD24
      • Small cell lung carcinoma cluster 4 antigen
      • CD24 antigen
      • CD24 antigen (small cell lung carcinoma cluster 4 antigen), CD24A
Background InformationThe CD24 antigen (also known as Small cell lung carcinoma cluster 4 antigen), which has a molecular weight of 35-45 kDa, is a glycosyl phosphatidylinositol (GPI)-anchored surface molecule. It is a member of a family that also includes HSA and CD52. Cross-linking of CD24 can induce increased intracellular Ca++ in mature B lymphocytes (Turni, 2002).
CD24 is expressed at multiple stages of B cell development, beginning with the bone marrow CD34+ pro-B-cell compartment and continuing through mature surface IgM+/IgD+ B cells. Plasma cells express very low to negligible levels of CD24 (Le Bien, 1995). CD24 is not expressed on the cell surface of normal T cells or monocytes, but is expressed on mature granulocytes (Le Bien, 1995; Fukukawa, 1986). The antigen is also present on a variety of epithelial types (Turni, 2002).

UniProt SummaryFUNCTION: May have a specific role to play in early thymocyte development.

      SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Cell membrane; Lipid-anchor › GPI-anchor.

TISSUE SPECIFICTY: In lymphoid, myeloid, and erythroid cells.

PTM: The identity of the N- and O-linked polysaccharides are not reported in Ref.6. The O-linked polysaccharides on Ser-30, Ser-41, Ser-43, and Thr-51 are probably the mucin type linked to GalNAc.

SEQUENCE SIMILARITIES: Belongs to the CD24 family.
