Udit Batra, Ph.D.
CEO and President of EMD Millipore

Udit Batra, Ph.D., is President and CEO of EMD Millipore, the Life Science division of Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany. In this capacity, he is responsible for the strategic direction and operation of this global organization. Prior to his appointment as President of EMD Millipore, Dr. Batra was CEO and President of the Consumer Health division of Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, where he successfully grew the business in established and emerging markets.

Dr. Batra joined Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, from Novartis Vaccines & Diagnostics, where he was previously Head of Global Public Health and Market Access, based in Boston, USA. Prior to that, he served in a range of executive management positions including global Head of Corporate Strategy at Novartis’ headquarters in Basel, Switzerland, as well as country President for the Pharma business of Novartis in Australia. Udit Batra started his career as a research engineer at Merck & Co. in West Point, Pennsylvania, USA. In 2001, he joined McKinsey where he worked across the healthcare, consumer and non-profit sectors as a senior engagement manager. In 2004, he was appointed global Brand Director for the Wound Care Franchise at Johnson & Johnson, before joining Novartis in 2006.

Dr. Batra is a member of the WSMI (World Self Medication Industry) and the Chair of the Food Supplements Committee of the AESGP (Association of the European Self-Medication Industry).

Udi Batra has a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the Princeton University and a Bachelors in Chemical Engineering with distinction from the University of Delaware. He was born in India and is a US citizen.


Andrew Bulpin
Head of Process Solutions

Andrew Bulpin oversees EMD Millipore’s Process Solutions business, based in Bedford, MA.

Dr. Bulpin joined Millipore in 2006 as Vice President for the Upstream Processing business and later assumed leadership of the Services and Solutions business. Following the company’s acquisition by Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, he served as Global Head of Sales for the Pharmaceutical Chemical Solutions business. Prior to joining EMD Millipore, Mr. Bulpin worked at Serologicals Corporation in a number of sales and marketing roles, both in the U.S. and Europe.

Dr. Bulpin received a Ph.D. in organic chemistry from the Université de Caen, France, a Master’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Strathclyde, Scotland, and a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Sussex, England. He also worked as a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at the Australian National University, Australia.


John Sweeney
Head of Lab Solutions

John Sweeney is the Head of EMD Millipore’s Lab Solutions Business Area, based in Molsheim, France. He previously served as Head of Bioscience, where he oversaw the strategy, sales, marketing, and R&D for the $550M, 1,000 employee business and drove strategic acquisitions to expand Bioscience’s product and service portfolio.

Mr. Sweeney began his career at EMD Millipore in 2003 as a Director of Strategy and Business Development, and later served as Vice President for Strategy and Marketing for the Bioscience Business Unit. Before joining the organization, Mr. Sweeney worked for Bain and Company, the Berkshire Group, and Resource Strategies Inc.

Mr. Sweeney received a Master’s degree in Business Administration from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College, and a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania.


Christophe Couturier
Head of Bioscience

Christophe Couturier is the Head of EMD Millipore’s Bioscience Business Area, based in Danvers, MA. He previously led the Provantage® Services business and the Strategic Marketing team for the Process Solutions Business Unit of EMD Millipore.

Mr. Couturier joined the organization in 2004 as Vice President of Finance for the Bioscience Division. During the past nine years, he has served in leadership positions for Corporate Planning and Strategy Management, Finance for the Bioprocess Division, and integration oversight.

Mr. Couturier was previously an Associate Partner at IBM Business Consulting Services and PwC Consulting in the Finance and Life Sciences practices. Before his consulting career, Mr. Couturier held Senior Finance positions at Celesio and Novartis in Europe. He has worked and lived in Switzerland, France, Turkey, Norway, Hungary, United Kingdom and the United States.

Mr. Couturier received a MBA from the ESSEC Business School in Paris, France.


Daniel Stamm
Head of Global Commercial Process Solutions

Mr. Stamm has more than 25 years of experience in international business and biopharmaceutical manufacturing.

Mr. Stamm started his career with Millipore Switzerland in 1988, based in Zurich. Since then he has held many positions within the organization including application sales support for the lab water, bioscience, and biomonitoring businesses. From 2001 to 2005 he served as general manager in Millipore’s Process Solutions business in Europe, taking a lead role in transforming the legacy Millipore organization from a country-based model to a cross-country, European model. Mr. Stamm continued his leadership in Process Solutions, overseeing the worldwide field operations, establishing the global key account program in 2010, most recently leading a Process Solutions business field.

Daniel started his career as a public school teacher in Switzerland and Sweden, and then obtained a Masters degree in Biology from the University of Zurich. He is an active member of the Swiss Biotech Association.


David Jeans
Head of Lab EMEA

David Jeans is the Head of EMD Millipore’s Lab EMEA Commercial business. He previously served as Head of Merck International and was responsible for the overall EMD Millipore business in Latin America, Central and Eastern Europe, Middle East, Africa and Asia Pacific. As Head of Merck International, Mr. Jeans established the International Organization and was responsible for the overall "Go-to-Market" strategy.

Mr. Jeans has held several leadership positions within Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, including Managing Director at Merck Chemicals in the UK, General Manager for Bioscience in Europe, Director of Merck Chemicals in South Africa and Head of the Global Export Business for Merck Eurolab. Mr. Jeans also held the position of Global Operations Manager at VWR and also had previous experience within the life science and petrochemical industries.

Mr. Jeans received a Bachelor Degree in Biochemistry from the University of Natal in South Africa and an Honours Degree in Medical Biochemistry from the University of Cape Town in South Africa. He has a Master’s degree in Medicine from the University of Cape Town and a Master’s degree in Business Administration from Ashridge Management College in England.


Klaus Bischoff
Head of Lab North America

Klaus Bischoff is the Head of EMD Millipore’s Laboratory business in the Americas. Prior to his appointment, he oversaw EMD Millipore’s €1.,1 billion global Lab Solutions business unit, where he had full responsibility for Lab Solution’s four business fields.

Mr. Bischoff also oversaw EMD Millipore’s entire emerging market business and had direct responsibility for EMD Millipore’s business in China and India.

Prior to Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany’s acquisition of Millipore in 2010, Mr. Bischoff served for three years as President of Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany’s Performance and Life Sciences Chemicals Division, based in Darmstadt, Germany. He also served as President and Country Manager of the Merck Group in Taiwan, General Manager of Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany’s Cosmetics business (based in Darmstadt) and Division Manager of the Chemicals Division for Merck S.A. Rio de Janiero. He started his career with Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany in 1986 as a Product Manager in the company’s Pigments business.

Mr. Bischoff holds a diploma in Business Administration from the University of Cooperative Education in Mannheim, Germany.


Chris Ross
Head of Operations

Chris Ross leads Operations for EMD Millipore and is responsible for 4,000 operations employees in 27 plants around the world. He manages all aspects of supply chain and manufacturing across three Technology Clusters – Biologics, Separations and Inorganics & Specialties – and ensures customer satisfaction across the value chain. Mr. Ross drives manufacturing strategy, operational excellence and supply chain management processes to improve, cost, quality and delivery of products for EMD Millipore’s customers.

Mr. Ross began his career with the organization in May 2008 as the Director of Manufacturing operations in Danvers, MA. He later worked as Managing Director of Cork-Consett Operations and then Vice President of the Separations Technology Cluster, both based in EMD Millipore’s Cork, Ireland manufacturing site. Prior to joining EMD Millipore, Mr. Ross held operations and supply chain positions at Raytheon, AMETEK, and General Electric.

Mr. Ross received a Master’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Washington in Seattle and a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute.


Robert Nass
Head of Quality and Regulatory Management

Robert Nass is responsible for Quality and Regulatory Management within EMD Millipore. Mr. Nass is leading the implementation of Quality Management Systems that foster a culture of quality assurance throughout the division. His organization also ensures that products are registered according to applicable regulations.

Mr. Nass has held several positions within the Merck Group, including Vice President of Corporate Quality Assurance, Director of Quality Operations in Darmstadt, and Director of Quality in France. Prior to joining the organization, Mr. Nass worked for Hoffman-La Roche as an Assistant Manager for manufacturing of Sterile Products.

Mr. Nass holds a Doctorate in Pharmacy and has passed the German state examination.


Christina Kim
Head of Divisional Business Development

As the Head of EMD Millipore’s Divisional Business Development, Ms. Kim leads the EMD Millipore strategy process and all divisional transactions involving acquisitions of assets and equity in partnership with group M&A. Ms. Kim defines the external growth priorities for the division and drives global efforts to identify and evaluate opportunities consistent with the strategic priorities. Ms. Kim is also responsible for market analysis and facilitating business development activities that are cross-Division.

Ms. Kim joined EMD Millipore in 2008 as the Director for Business Development and later became the Director of Strategic Marketing for the Process Solutions business. Prior to that, she held key business development, marketing, sales and operations positions with Gentek, Inc. and Konica Graphics Imaging.

Ms. Kim received a Master’s degree in Business Administration from St. John’s University, and a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from Cornell University.


Megan Wherry Menner
Head of Human Resources

Ms. Menner is Vice President of Human Resources and Head of HR Business Partners Chemicals. Based in Billerica, MA, Ms. Menner oversees HR responsibility for the global HR Business Partners for the Chemicals sector of Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, including EMD Millipore employees. She is a member of the Merck Chemicals, EMD Millipore and Group Human Resources leadership teams.

Ms. Menner previously served as Vice President and Head of HR International for Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, leading more than 300 human resources colleagues in more than 60 countries worldwide. Together with her team, Ms. Menner was also responsible for designing a global HR organization to support all aspects of the Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, business in pharmaceuticals, chemicals and group functions.

Ms. Menner joined Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany in October 2007 as Vice President of Human Resources for EMD Serono, with responsibility for all HR functions for 1,200 US employees. Before joining Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, she was a member of the Novartis Executive HR Leadership Team and served in various roles, including Director and Global Head of Talent & Culture Development for Novartis Global Research and HR Head for Research UK. Ms. Menner has also worked in HR at Amgen and Bristol Myers-Squibb, as well as in companies in high tech and financial services. Ms. Menner earned both a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Economics and Master’s degree in Human Resources and Organizational Behavior from Cornell University.


Jean Charles Wirth
Head of Finance and Controlling

Jean Charles Wirth is Head of Finance and Controlling for EMD Millipore. Mr. Wirth has full financial responsibility for EMD Millipore, a €2.6 billion business. He provides financial decision support on a wide scope of operational and strategic matters and manages all areas of financial responsibility including: financial reporting and forecasting, business analysis, resource allocation and capital planning.

Mr. Wirth began his career with the organization in 2006, previously serving as a Worldwide Controller in Millipore, Senior Finance Director Bioscience and VP Finance, Head of Controlling for the Performance Materials division.

Prior to joining EMD Millipore, Jean-Charles served as a Finance Manager for Baxter. He has also held financial, controlling and consultant positions at PricewaterhouseCoopers, Crown Inc. and Alcatel Lucent.

Mr. Wirth received a Master’s degree in Business Administration from Sciences Po in Paris, and graduated from the Ecole Supérieure de Gestion Paris Business School.


Renee Connolly
Head of Communications

Renee Connolly is Head of Communications at EMD Millipore. Ms. Connolly oversees the EMD Millipore brand strategy, internal and external communications and the division’s Corporate Responsibility and employee engagement initiatives. She also oversees tradeshows and events for EMD Millipore.

Prior to joining EMD Millipore, Ms. Connolly served as Vice President of US Communications at EMD Millipore’s affiliate, EMD Serono, Inc., where she was responsible for all external and internal communications, including public relations and community affairs. Previously, Ms. Connolly was General Manager for the Euro-RSCG public relations firm where she led the Life Sciences practice.

Ms. Connolly received a Bachelor’s degree from Ithaca College in NY.


David Hutchinson
Head of Legal

David Hutchinson is responsible for legal matters pertaining to EMD Millipore’s worldwide business operations. In this role he oversees all legal issues related to the development and implementation of the division’s business strategy, corporate governance, human resources, compliance, general commercial matters and litigation. He also has senior responsibility for the oversight and management of the division’s outside legal counsel and legal compliance programs.

Mr. Hutchinson joined EMD Millipore in 2005 as Assistant General Counsel for the division, providing legal support for acquisitions, alliances, public securities compliance and reporting, corporate financing, governance and general commercial operations. Before joining EMD Millipore, Mr. Hutchinson was a partner in the corporate departments of several Boston law firms, including Choate, Hall & Stewart, where he counseled both public and privately held corporations in the areas of corporate law, corporate finance, securities law, mergers and acquisitions, and venture capital. He began his career in finance, working primarily as Financial Manager for Digital Equipment Corporation (later Hewlett-Packard Company) in Maynard, Massachusetts.

Mr. Hutchinson received a J. D. from Boston University School of Law and a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania, Wharton School of Finance, with concentrations in finance and international business.
