Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death worldwide. In 2012 an estimated 17.5 million people died of CVDs, representing 31% of total global deaths. Heart failure is the leading cause of hospitalization with more than 1 million cases annually in Europe and North America.

Cardiac biomarkers are protein-based substances used as an indicator of biologic state for diagnosis and prognosis of cardiovascular diseases.

The growing application of cardiac biomarkers as point-of-care (POC) testing facilitate quick results in emergent situations and are used in around 50% of US emergency rooms with routine use on the increase.
