NIH 3T3 Cells: This commonly used, housekeeping cell line is a spontaneously immortalized derivation of mouse embryonic fibroblasts.

Jurkat Cells: Jurkat cells are an immortalized line of T lymphocytes derived from human T-cell leukemia. They are relatively small suspension cells used frequently in immunological and cancer research to study T lymphocyte behavior.

K562 Cells: The K562 erythroleukemia cell line was derived from the bone marrow of a patient with chronic myelogenous leukemia. The cells grow in suspension and are relatively large in diameter. This cell line is popular for use in immunological studies of natural killer (NK) cell activity.

Human Mesenchymal Cells: Mesenchymal stem cells are a self-renewing population of adherent, bone-marrow-derived multipotent progenitor cells with the capacity to differentiate into several mesenchymal cell lineages. In in vitro assays, mesenchymal stem cells have been shown to readily differentiate into lineage-specific cells that form bone, cartilage, fat, tendon, and muscle tissues. Mesenchymal stem cells also provide support and maintenance for the other major stem cell population in the bone marrow, the hematopoietic stem cells.

SF9 Cells: SF9 cells are insect cells derived from Spodoptera frugiperda (Fall Armyworm). They are often used to produce recombinant proteins.

3T3-L1 Cells: Derived from the NIH 3T3 fibroblast line, 3T3-L1 cells can be induced to differentiate into cells exhibiting adipocytic morphology. 3T3-L1 cells are therefore used as models of adipose tissue in cell-based assays, and they grow as a fibroblast-like adherent monolayer.

CHO Cells: The most commonly used mammalian cell line for producing overexpressed recombinant proteins, CHO cells are derived from Chinese hamster ovary. They grow as an adherent monolayer.

HeLa Cells: This immortal, adherent, rapidly proliferating cell line was originally isolated from a cervical lesion of a cancer patient. HeLa cells express active telomerase, which allows propagation for many passages. HeLa cells have been used for decades as a tumor cell model, and for developing in vitro assays for virtually every application.

HepG2 Cells: HepG2 cells are adherent, immortal, polarized hepatocytes from a liver cancer patient. Because they share so many morphological and functional characteristics with cells from normal liver tissue, HepG2 cells are used for cell-based assays of liver function, metabolism, and compound toxicity.

HUVECs Cells: Human Umbilical Vein Endothelial Cells (HUVECs) are a commonly studied human cell type extracted from human neonatal umbilical cords. They are relatively easy to culture, and provide a valuable cell model for many vascular biology research applications, including inflammation, angiogenesis, atherosclerosis, blood clotting, vasoconstriction, and vasodilation.

mES Cells: The mouse embryonic stem (mES) cells used here for cell counting are the PluriStem™ 129S6 Murine ES cell line, derived from the widely used 129/S6/SvEv strain of mice (at 3.5 days p.c.). This cell line is characterized by the production of highly chimeric, germline-competent mice. PluriStem 129S6 ES cells grow as tightly clustered, small colonies with tight, phase bright borders.

rNS Cells: The rat neural stem (rNS) cells used here are actually primary adult NS cells isolated from the hippocampus of adult Fisher 344 rats. NS cells provide a model for studying differentiation towards the neuronal, astrocyte and oligodendrocyte lineages for research or therapeutic purposes.

S522 Hybridomas: Hybridomas are created by fusing an antibody-producing B-lymphocyte with an immortalized myeloma B cell (such as S522), in order to generate large quantities of specific, monoclonal antibodies of interest in a suspension culture.

CD3+ T Cells: CD3+ T cells regulate cell-mediated immune response via the T cell receptor on its surface, of which CD3 is one protein component. High T cell counts can be indicative of viral infection, while low counts may be correlated with increased susceptibility to infection.
