      Número de Entrez Gene
Resumen de Entrez Gene The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the keratin gene family. The type II cytokeratins consist of basic or neutral proteins which are arranged in pairs of heterotypic keratin chains coexpressed during differentiation of simple and stratified epithelial tissues. This type II cytokeratin is specifically expressed in differentiated layers of the mucosal and esophageal epithelia with family member KRT13. Mutations in these genes have been associated with White Sponge Nevus, characterized by oral, esophageal, and anal leukoplakia. The type II cytokeratins are clustered in a region of chromosome 12q12-q13.

      Número UniProt
Resumen UniProt FUNCTION: SwissProt: P05787 # Together with KRT19, helps to link the contractile apparatus to dystrophin at the costameres of striated muscle.
SIZE: 483 amino acids; 53704 Da
SUBUNIT: Heterotetramer of two type I and two type II keratins. keratin-8 associates with keratin-18. Associates with KRT20. Interacts with HCV core protein and PNN. When associated with KRT19, interacts with DMD. Interacts with TCHP.
      SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Cytoplasm.
TISSUE SPECIFICITY: Observed in muscle fibers accumulating in the costameres of myoplasm at the sarcolemma membrane in structures that contain dystrophin and spectrin. Expressed in gingival mucosa and hard palate of the oral cavity.
PTM: Phosphorylation on serine residues is enhanced during EGF stimulation and mitosis. Ser-74 phosphorylation plays an important role in keratin filament reorganization.
      DISEASE:SwissProt: P05787 # Defects in KRT8 are a cause of cryptogenic cirrhosis [MIM:215600].
SIMILARITY: SwissProt: P05787 ## Belongs to the intermediate filament family.
MISCELLANEOUS: There are two types of cytoskeletal and microfibrillar keratin: I (acidic; 40-55 kDa) and II (neutral to basic; 56-70 kDa).
